About Us

Barnes Van Lines combines the caring, personal attention of a small, second-generation, family-owned business with full-range local, national and international capabilities. Who we are has been shaped by three generations of transportation professionals.

We started in the early 1930s as a Georgia freight company opened by Carl Barnes to link area shippers to the rest of the nation. In 1950, he created a
specialized truck service, Barnes Moving & Storage, to help relocate families and their personal belongings locally. When employee Marion Lee New and wife Julia purchased the company in 1970, we started relocating military families. This specialty earned us the service industry's highest award, the Department of Defense's Transportation Contractor of the Year Award.

In 1987, son Chris moved up to become general manager and vice president. In 1990, he began establishing alliances to form a nationwide agency network. As a majority owner, president and CEO in 1992, the younger New changed our name to Barnes Van Lines to reflect our worldwide delivery capabilities.

Continuing our trend of growth, in 2003, Barnes Van Lines acquired Paul Arpin of Atlanta which doubled our moving and storage capabilities and made Barnes Van Lines a major player in the Atlanta market.
